5.22 The One With Joey’s Big Break

Rachel has an eye infection but doesn’t want anyone touching her eye.

Monica finally gets her to a doctor but then Rachel won’t use the eyedrops.

Everyone has to hold her down and force her to use them.

Phoebe is mad at Ross but can’t remember why.

Joey gets the lead role in a independent film called Shutter Speed, being filmed in Las Vegas.

He and Chandler start a road trip but Chandler lets slip(v.无意中说出) that he doesn’t think this is Joey’s big break, and gets kicked out of the car.

Joey makes it to Vegas but the movie is shutting down from lack of funds, leaving Joey trying to make ends meet(v.收支相抵) as a gladiator at Caesar’s Palace.

[Scene: Central Perk, everyone but Phoebe are there reading. Rachel is sitting on the couch flanked by Ross and Monica. She suddenly stops reading and starts blinking her left eye as if it’s bothering her. The problem is that Joey is on her left and thinks she’s winking at him and winks back. Ross is watching this and isn’t quite sure of what to make of it.]

Ross: What’s going on?

Rachel: Well, my eye is a little itchy.

itchy adj.使人发痒的

(Ross turns to look at Joey.)

Joey: Uhhh, mine too! Yeah.

Monica: (To Rachel) Wow! It’s really red! You should go see my eye doctor.

Rachel: Richard? I’m not gonna go see your ex-boyfriend!

Chandler: Oh, Richard. That’s all I ever hear, Richard, Richard, Richard!

Monica: Since we’ve been going out, I think I’ve mentioned his name twice!

Chandler: Okay, so Richard, Richard!

Monica: It’s not Richard! Okay? It’s this new guy and he’s really good.

Rachel: Well, I’m sorry I’m not going to an eye doctor!

Ross: Oh God, here we go又来了!

Chandler: What?

Ross: Anytime anything comes close to touching her eye or anyone else’s she like freaks out. Watch! Watch! (He takes his finger and moves it towards his eye.)

Rachel: (flinches) Ross! Come on! That’s all right! Fine–Okay, I have a weird thing about my eye. Can we not talk about it please?

flinch vi.畏缩 退缩 畏首畏尾

All: All right, fine.

Monica: Hey Rach, remember that great song, Me, Myself, and I? (And on the “I” part she mimics poking her eye.)

Me,Myself, and I:瑞秋对眼睛(Eye)这个词敏感,听了就难受,所以众人就尽情调戏她。莫尼卡对她说: “你还记得那首伟大的歌吗?《我,我自己和我(Me,Myself, and I)》?”这首歌是著名爵士乐代表女歌手比利·霍利迪(Billie Holiday)的名曲,但这里面的关键是有Eye的谐音“I”/ Billie Holiday (April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959), born Eleanora Fagan and later called Lady Day, was an American jazz singer.

Rachel: (flinches again) Monica! Come on!

Ross: Hey, does anybody want to get some lunch? All those in favor of getting lunch, say, ‘I’ (Pokes his eye)

Rachel: (freaks) Ross! Stop it! Come on!

Chandler: How much did I love The King and I? (Oh, you get the point by now.)

The King and I:钱德勒也说:“我是多么喜欢看《国王与我(The King and I)》啊!”这是尤伯连纳主演的著名电影,周润发后来也又演绎了一遍,但这里面的关键也是因为有一个“I”可以刺激瑞秋/ The King and I is a musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with a script based on the book Anna and the King of Siam[n.暹罗(泰国的旧称)] by Margaret Landon. The plot comes from the story written by Anna Leonowens, who became school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Leonowens’ story was autobiographical(adj.自传体的) except that(adv.只可惜) its objective accuracy is questionable. In Thailand, the possession of anything related to Anna and the King of Siam or The King and I is illegal, because of what the Thai government says are historical inaccuracies(n.

Rachel: Chandler!

Joey: Me too! Me too! Me too! (Yeah, he does the same thing.)

Rachel: Just stop it! Come on!

(Joey howls in pain and holds his eye.)

howl v.嚎叫 怒吼

Chandler: You okay there man?

Joey: Yeah, I got too excited!

Joey: It’s called Shutter Speed, it’s really cool! Yeah, umm, I meet this girl in the subway and we fall in love in like a day, right? And then, she disappears… But I find out where she lives and when I get there this like old lady answers the door and I say, “Where’s Betsy?” Right? And she says, “Betsy’s been dead for 10 years.”

Chandler: Yeah, I know that means buddy!

Joey: Road trip! Yeah, we can rent a car! I just have to be there by Tuesday!

Phoebe: Oh wait, my grandmother’s dead.

Chandler: Well, uh, we can talk about that too Pheebs.

Phoebe: No! No, her cab! She probably won’t be using it; you can drive it to Las Vegas.

Joey: All right! Thanks Pheebs!

Chandler: Whoa-whoa-whoa, what are we going to do about my job?

Joey: Oh umm, not go.

Chandler: All right, great, road trip baby! (To Monica) This okay with you?

Monica: Chandler! You don’t have to ask for my permission. (Quietly) You can go.

Chandler: Thank you.

Monica: Hey Rach, come on! We’re gonna be late for the eye doctor appointment!

Rachel: (entering from her bedroom) All right! Let’s get this over with! Ugh! (She walks by the table and notices that no one is looking and accidentally on purpose knocks over the open cereal box.) Ohhh! No! Look what I did! (She starts walking through the mess. {Also, notice the continuity error in this scene. Note the position of the box and dispersal pattern of the cereal before and after the camera cut.}) Oh, I mean, look at this mess! I mean, we’re probably gonna have to clean this up! Y’know? We’re gonna have to reschedule!

Monica: No. If you thought this mess is going to bother me, you are wrong! All right, let’s go Blinky! (She ushers Rachel out the door, but before the door fully closes she sticks her head back in.) Chandler!!!! (Chandler agrees to clean up the mess.)

blinky:A 3-eyed mutant(n.突变异种) fish created by toxic waste spewed(v.喷涌) out of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant(n.核电厂).

[Scene: Central Perk, Joey is reading a map as Phoebe enters.]

Phoebe: Oh hey Joey! What’s up?

Joey: I can’t decide which route to take to Vegas. Hey, you’ve traveled a lot right?

Phoebe: Yeah, I’ve been around我是见过不少世面.

Joey: Okay, so-so which route should I take the northern route or the southern route?

Phoebe: Ooh, if you take the northern route there’s a man in Illinois with a beard of bees. {Okay, I must protest this, I’ve lived in Illinois all my life and know of no man with a beard of bees! Wisconsin, on the other hand, might be a different story.}

a beard of bees

Joey: Great! Problem solved!

Phoebe: But on the southern route there’s a chicken that plays tic-tac-toe.

井字游戏), hugs and kisses, and many other names, is a pen-and-paper game for two players, O and X, who take turns to mark the spaces in a 3×3 grid. Phoebe: Oh, I know a way that you can decide! All right, I’m going to ask you a series of questions and you answer as quickly as you can.

Joey: (quickly) Yes!

Phoebe: Good, but wait. Okay, all right, here we go. Now I want you to relax. Take a deep breath. Clear your mind. (Quickly) Which do you like better peanut butter or egg whites?

Phoebe: Oh, this guy again. (She ignores him.)

Joey: Hey man, what’s up?

Ross: Uhh, not much. You guys want to see a movie tonight?

Joey: Sure, what do you want to see?

Ross: I don’t know, umm…

Joey: Oh, I know how we can decide. Phoebe, show him your game!

Phoebe: Umm, no thank you. (She gets up and moves to the couch. They were at a table previously.)

Ross: What’s with her?

Joey: I don’t know. But hey, I know we can decide. Okay, I’m gonna ask you questions and you answer real quick. Okay?

Ross: Okay.

Joey: What do you like better action or comedy?

Ross: Action.

Joey: Who would you rather sleep with Monica or Rachel?

(Ross pauses and looks at him, Joey motions for him to hurry up.)

Ross: Dude, you are sick.

Joey: Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot you had that whole Rachel thing.

(Rachel heads for the door but is intercepted by the doctor.)

The Doctor: Hi Rachel!

Rachel: Hey!

The Doctor: I’m Dr. Miller. Monica told me you were a little nervous, but don’t worry everything’s gonna be just fine.

Rachel: So we were done then就这样结束吧!

Dr. Miller: Almost! But first, we gotta start.

Rachel: Okay.

Dr. Miller: This is a glaucoma test.

Dr. Miller: Sit down.

Rachel: Okay.

Dr. Miller: Put your chin here. (She does so.) Now, you’ll feel a small puff of air in each eye.

Rachel: (jerks back from the tester) What?!

Monica: A small puff of air, now come on!

Dr. Miller: Here we go.

Rachel: All right.

Dr. Miller: 1…2…3! (Rachel jerks back on 3.)

Rachel: I’m sorry. All right, I’ll just stay in here this time. (Puts her head back.) Okay.

Dr. Miller: Ready?

Rachel: Uh-huh.

Chandler: Yeah, listen, how cold is it going to be there? Do I need a coat or will all these sweater vests be enough? (Holds up 3 of them in different colors.)

(Monica stares at him.)

Chandler: What?

Monica: I love you.

{There’s another continuity error here. Before Monica says I love you, Chandler’s holding the vests so that you couldn’t see the collar, you could see all three, and they were folding nicely. After she says the line and the camera cuts back to Chandler, you can only see two out of the three, you can see the collar of the top one, and it looks like it was folded sloppily, unlike before. Joey: Hey!

Ross: I just wanna say good-bye to you guys and to see if you guys will place a little bet for me, huh? Twenty bucks on black 15.

Phoebe: Apology accepted.

[Scene: Phoebe’s cab, Joey and Chandler are headed across the George Washington bridge on their way to Las Vegas. Joey is driving.]

The George Washington Bridge (known informally as the GW Bridge, the GWB, the GW, or the George) is a toll suspension bridge(n.收费吊桥) spanning the Hudson River, connecting the Washington Heights neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City to Fort Lee in New Jersey by means of Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1/9. U.S. Route 46, which is entirely in New Jersey, ends halfway across the bridge at the state border. The GW is considered one of the world’s busiest bridges in terms of vehicle traffic; In 2004, the bridge carried 108,404,000 vehicles, with current AADT estimates of nearly 300,000 vehicles daily. This number is similar to that of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The GW span is the fourth largest suspension bridge in the U.S as of 2006.The bridge contains two levels(n.水平面), an upper level with four lanes in each direction and a lower level with three lanes in each direction, for a total of 14 lanes of travel. Additionally, the bridge houses(v.覆盖) two paths on either side of the bridge for pedestrian(n.人行道) traffic. The speed limit on the bridge is 45 mph (70 km/h), though heavy traffic is common and frequently makes it difficult to reach such speeds.

Joey: Man, I’m getting pretty tired. You’re might have to take over soon.

Chandler: We’ve been driving for a half-hour, and you haven’t looked at the road once.

Joey: Don’t worry, it’s out there! (Just then a horn honks and Joey quickly looks at the road.) I think I just need lunch.

Chandler: I don’t know.

Joey: Ooh, hey, I know how we can decide! All right, uh, I’m gonna ask you a bunch of questions and then you have to answer real fast. Okay? So uh, clear your mind Clear it right out! Clear it out! Clear!

Chandler: It’s all clear except for this image of a small, purple lamp. Is that all right if that stays in there?

purple lamp

Joey: I don’t see why not.I guess. You have to answer with the first thing that pops into your head, okay?

Chandler: Okay!

Joey: Okay, uhh, would you rather be too wet or too dry?

Chandler: Too dry.

Joey: Do you believe in ghosts, yes or no?

Chandler: No!

Joey: Is this movie gonna be my big break?

break<口>机会 好运[eg:As a long-distance runner his main break came last spring in Australia]

Chandler: No!

Joey: (shocked) What?!

Chandler: Yes.

Joey: Dude you said, “No!”

Chandler: I also said, “Yes!”

Joey: You don’t think this is going to be a big break for me?

Chandler: No! (Realizes) Ahhh!!!

Joey: I don’t believe this!

Chandler: Look Joe, I just, I just don’t want to get your hopes up too high.

Joey: What are you talking about?! I’m the lead in a movie!

Chandler: They’re not even paying ya! This doesn’t even sound like a real movie!

Joey: Y’know what? I don’t need this! Okay? I don’t know why you’re dumping all over my big break.

dump<俚>taking a shit

Chandler: Joe, I don’t think this is going to be your big break.

Joey: Is that why you’re on this trip, huh? Make me feel like a loser? ‘Cause if it is, I’ll tell ya, I-I-I’d rather be alone.

Chandler: Oh, you don’t want me on the trip?

Joey: Not if you’re gonna be like this!

Chandler: All right, I’ll tell ya what, the next time you ask me a question like that I’ll lie.

Joey: Yeah! I don’t want you on the trip!

Chandler: All right, fine! Fine! Why don’t you pull over? I’ll get out right now!

pull over v.停车 开到路边

Joey: Fine! (He slams on the brakes, stopping the car on the bridge to the sound of numerous car horns.) Get out!

Phoebe: No that made me feel precious.

board game n. 用棋盘玩的游戏

Ross: Okay, I’m the baby. (Points at his eye.)

Rachel: Eh! Stop it!

Chandler: (entering) Hey!

Monica: Chandler! What are you doing here?

Ross: Hey!

Chandler: Joey kicked me out of the car on the George Washington bridge!

All: Why?!

Chandler: I don’t know! He went crazy! Y’know, we were playing that game where you-you ask a question and you answer it really fast.

Phoebe: That game should not be played without my supervision.

supervision n.监督 管理

Chandler: Well, I don’t know what made him so mad, y’know? All I said was that uh, I didn’t think this wasn’t gonna be his big break, that this movie wasn’t going to do anything for him, and that uh, y’know it didn’t sound like a real movie–Okay, he should’ve pushed me off of the bridge.

Phoebe: What’s in the bag?

Chandler: Oh, I figured you guys would all be mad at me. So I got you some gifts that I found on the side of the road. (Looks into the bag.) Who wants the teddy bear with one leg?

The teddy bear:is a stuffed toy bear. It is an enduring(adj.持久的), traditional form of stuffed animal, often serving the purpose of comforting children. In recent times, some teddy bears have become expensive collector’s items. Teddy bear collectors are known as arcto-philes(A person who collects and enjoys teddy bears) from the Greek words ‘arcto’ (bear) and ‘philos’ (lover). The name Teddy Bear comes from one of Theodore Roosevelt’s hunting trips. There were several other hunters competing, and most of them had already shot something. A few friends of Roosevelt captured a bear cub(n.幼兽=joey) and told Roosevelt to shoot it. He refused, and it became a topic in a comic strip. A small town toy shop owner saw the cartoon, and asked the president if she could manufacture stuffed bears named as “Teddy’s Bears”. He approved, and the name has stuck ever since.

Phoebe: I do!

[Scene: Monica and Rachel’s, Rachel is trying to apply her eye drops while Monica looks on.]

Rachel: Okay. (She tilts her head back and squeezes the eyedropper. The only problem is, it’s not over her eye.)

Rachel: All right.

Monica: Put your head back.

Rachel: Yes!

Monica: All right.

Rachel: Okay.

Monica: Now, open your eyes.

Rachel: Okay, they are. (No they’re not.)

Monica: How many fingers am I holding up? (She’s not holding any up.)

Rachel: (thinks) Four.

Monica: Oh my God, I was thinking four.

Rachel: Oh my God! You really are freakishly strong!

Chandler: Y’know, he won’t even talk to me. How am I going to apologize to him if he won’t even talk to me?

Monica: Well, maybe you should send him something. So that when he gets to Las Vegas he’ll know that you’re sorry.

In Japanese cuisine, sushi is a food made of vinegared(adj.带醋的) rice combined with seafood. Most, but not all, fish used in sushi is un-cooked, but other ingredients may be cooked, smoked, blanched(adj.漂白的), sauteed(<法>炒的), or marinated[vt.(做色拉时将肉鱼等在调味汁中)浸泡].Sushi is an English word that has come to refer to a complete dish with rice and toppings; this is the sense used in this article. The original term Japanese: ushi (-zushi in some compounds such as makizushi), written in kanji(n.日本汉字), means snack and refers to rice, but not fish or other toppings.Outside of Japan, sushi is often misunderstood to mean clumps(n.块状物) of rice topped with raw fish or even the raw fish by itself. It is also misunderstood to refer to fresh raw-seafood dishes, such as a Japanese delicacy called sashimi(n.生鱼片) (sushi and sashimi are considered distinct in Japan). There are various types of sushi. Sushi served rolled in nori (dried and pressed layer sheets of seaweed[n.海藻] or alga[n.藻类]) is called maki or rolls.

Ross: Hey Rach, can you pass me the TV Guide?

Some even featured horoscope listings and crossword puzzles.

Rachel: Yep!

(As she moves to get it, Monica yells…)

Monica: Go!!

(Phoebe jumps to the floor as Ross tackles Rachel off of the couch. Chandler helps push Rachel onto the floor by jumping over the back of the couch. Phoebe grabs Rachel’s head to hold it still and opens Rachel’s eye as Monica jumps onto Chandler’s back to administer the torture–I mean medicine.)

End

“The One With Joey’s Big Break” is the 22nd episode of season 5 of the sitcom Friends.

First aired: May 13, 1999

When the show starts Rachel is complaining about her eyes. Monica tells her to see her eye doctor, but Rachel refuses. She doesn’t like it when people touch her eyes. In fact she doesn’t like it when anyone touches any eye. The group starts making jokes of this, using words with the sound of “eye” while pointing to their own eyes (“Did you like the movie The King and Eye?”).

Joey gets news from his agent that he is going to play the lead in an upcoming movie. The filming location for the movie is in Las Vegas. After hearing that, Chandler decides to go along with(v.一起去) Joey (after asking permission from his girlfriend, Monica). Later, when Joey and Phoebe are sitting in Central Perk, Joey can’t decide which route he’ll take to Vegas. Phoebe says that the north route has a man in Illinois with a beard of bees. Joey decides to take the south route, but then Phoebe remembers that the South route has a chicken that plays tic-tac-toe. Now Joey can’t decide, since he likes both routes. Phoebe then tries a game with him: Joey must clear his mind, and she asks him several questions very quickly. After she asked the question about which route he’ll take he answers that he’ll take the north route.

Monica and Rachel visit the eye doctor after much persuasion by Monica. The doctor wants to use a special machine to inspect Rachel’s eyes for glaucoma. The machine blows tiny puffs of air in her eyes. The doctor counts to ‘3’, but on every “3” Rachel pulls back her head. After a couple of times, the doctor says that she is still young and probably is fine. He does tell her, however, that she has a minor infection in her left eye and gives her eye drops for it. When they are leaving, Monica quickly reads the letters from an eye chart, and is awarded with candy.

Meanwhile, Phoebe is very upset with Ross, but can’t remember why. When everyone (except for Joey and Chandler) sits in Central Perk, Ross posits(v.假定) several reasons why Phoebe might be unhappy with him, but doesn’t find the right reason. Chandler and Joey walk in, announcing their departure to Vegas. Ross gives Joey a $20 bill and tells him to put it on “Black 15”.

In Monica’s apartment she tries to convince Rachel to use the drops, but she refuses. Monica tries everything to get the drops in Rachel’s eyes. She even puts Rachel on the floor and holds her down while trying to spray the drops in her eyes (she held the drops bottle in her mouth). She is unsuccessful and the bottle is empty.

When Joey and Chandler are on the George Washington Bridge on their way to Vegas, Joey plays Phoebe’s game with Chandler. When he comes to the question “Is this movie going to be my big break?”, Chandler replies “no”, only to find a startled Joey. He quickly adds “yes” but it’s too late. Joey gets upset, and asks the same question again. Chandler once again replies “no”. Joey gets very angry about this, and forces Chandler out of the car in the middle of the bridge.

Later on when everyone is sitting in Central Perk, Chandler comes walking in, telling everyone why Joey put him out of the car. He really wants to make up with Joey, and desperately tries to find a way how to do it.

In Vegas, Joey arrives at the film site. He meets with the director, calling himself “the leading man”. The director tells him that there isn’t going to be a shoot, because they don’t have the money. They will have it in a week or two, so he tells Joey to stick around.

Later, Joey calls Monica’s apartment and speaks to her and Phoebe. Chandler walks in, and wants to talk to Joey, but when Phoebe tells Joey he has already hung up on her. Ross has an idea how he can find out why Phoebe is mad with him; he asks Phoebe several questions in quick succession. After he asks “Why are you mad at me?”, she says “You said I was boring.” Ross can’t remember ever saying that she was boring, but she claims he said it while playing chess. Ross claims they never played chess together, but according to Phoebe they did so on a frozen lake, and that after a while he ripped off his energy mask and became Cameron Diaz. Phoebe realizes that it might have been a dream.

At the end of the episode, Joey is in Caesars Palace wearing a gladiator costume. He walks away from the pay phone, back to a family to pose for a picture. Apparently he works there now, since the movie has been cancelled.

When the credits roll, we see Monica, Ross, Chandler, Phoebe and Rachel sitting on the couch in Monica’s apartment. Ross asks Rachel for the TV guide, so she leans over to get it. At that point Monica shouts “GO”, and everyone pushes Rachel to the floor and holds her there. Monica pounces(v,突袭), putting the eye drops in Rachel’s eyes. When she is done, the rest of the gang releases Rachel, telling her that they’ll “see her in three to four hours”.

As Chandler is thrown out of the cab on the bridge, the pan-out shot shows the the bridge.

After returning to the coffee house, Chandler explains that he was thrown out of the cab on the George Washington Bridge, however the pan-out shot clearly shows the Manhattan Bridge.
